The outward signs of fleas on your pet can indicate a deeper problem: TAPEWORMS.

Fleas are the primary source of tapeworms, and when fleas are ON your pet, tapeworms can easily get IN your pet.

Tapeworms need a vehicle to carry them inside your pet and fleas are the perfect mode of transportation.  Tapeworm segments filled with eggs are passed through animal feces.  These flat tapeworm segments resembling rice kernels may be seen on the rectal area of an infected animal.  Fleas in the pre-adult stage then eat the tapeworm eggs, which become larvae in the flea.

Your pet's dislike for fleas makes it an easy target to for a tapeworm.  Through normal grooming your pet can swallow a flea that contains tapeworm larvae.  The larvae inside the adult flea now have a suitable environment to hatch and mature.

Symptoms of tapeworm infections:

1) segments passed through feces resemble flattened grains of rice

2) segments are white to yellow in color

3) segments may be found in hair around rectum of your pet, or in feces

4) pet may have dull hair coat

5) pet maybe biting or scooting on rear end
